Edgewalkers

Calibrating Risk

One of the things that distinguishes Edgewalkers, those who walk on the leading edge, is their willingness to take risks that others might not. I define healthy risk-taking as; “The ability to try what hasn’t been tried before, to trust your instincts, and to break new ground.” Because of their interest in exploring what’s over the horizon and their passion for creating something new, Edgewalkers are likely to take calibrated risks in service of making a difference.  With the Edgwalkers I have interviewed, it is not unusual to hear that they have made major changes in their lives.  One successful artist destroyed all his work one night and went off to live on an island in Puget Sound to go more deeply into what wanted to emerge through him.  A year later he began making art again and his work was more three-dimensional and powerful than ever before.  Business leaders have bet the farm on a new product or service. Others have been willing to move to an unknown place because something was calling. Some have closed down or sold companies that became too constraining for where their spirit was leading them.

However, not all risk-taking is made up of dramatic life-changes. Sometimes the risk can be a small act that makes a huge difference.  It can be the choice to listen deeply rather than lecturing or trying to control a person. It can be a choice to be vulnerable and to speak your truth to another, even if it might endanger the relationship.  It can even be a choice to sit still and just be with yourself and your anxiety when you would rather be up and busy doing anything but listening to your own still, small voice.

It’s important to caliberate between risk-taking and risky behavior. When I talk about risk-taking, the context is taking action in service of something greater. Edgewalkers, in their risk-taking, are responding to a vision of something they want to manifest, and they are willing to do what it takes to create something that has never existed before.  They feel a sense of calling and are willing to make the necessary sacrifices to fulfill their destiny.

Risky behavior, on the other hand, comes from the ego and is often not healthy. It is done in the service of thrill-seeking and selfish pleasure.  It does not consider the impact on others.  I am not talking here of extreme athletes and others who want to push the boundaries of human potential. I am talking about behavior that puts self and others in potential danger. Street racing, drinking games, risky sexual behavior, gambling are examples of unhealthy risky behavior. At the moment they might make someone feel more fully alive, but there is a good chance of potential harm and long-term consequences.

In these days of Covid-19, I have chosen to take zero risk. I have work that matters to me now and in the future, and I want to be healthy and alive to do it. I don’t socialize, even outdoors. I don’t travel, even though I miss my family and friends. I wear a mask, even if I’m just walking on my street.  I am calibrating my personal risk very tightly because the negative repercussions on my loved ones and on the work I’m called to do are potentially too high to be worth even the slightest risk. These are my personal decisions and are based on my calibration of the costs vs. gains. Each person has to make their own calibration of the level of risk that works for them in their situation.

A key guiding question is “Am I doing this in the service of what I’m called to do, or is this just for the momentary thrill and pleasure of it?” Your gut and your heart will know the right answer.

Feeling Into Tomorrow’s Reality

November 12, 2020

By Susan K. Furness, Edgewalker Senior Associate

If there is one thing I have long-since known, it is that you cannot know the future. So, when Dr. Judi Neal named “Sensing the Future” as one of the five Edgewalker Skills I was immediately drawn to the conversation.

The notion of Sensing the Future speaks to me in a number of ways.

  • Sensing the Future speaks to both the creative and logical me, reminding you don’t know what you don’t know and you definitely don’t know the Future until it is has moved through being Present, to become the Past.
  • Sensing the Future stirs my sixth sense of Intuition into play to power-up other ‘sense intelligences’ (hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, tasting. When I combo the embodied knowing of intuition with what I (perceive) I know, I notice how graceful ‘movement’ becomes.
  • Sensing the Future offers me comfort as I give myself permission to stay present, to vision what could be next, but not labour on, or yearn for, what is next now.

I am nudged to consider the difference and/or relationship between Knowing and Sensing. The author Mark Nepo suggests its common to confuse plans with planning, dreams with dreaming and love with loving. Mark also shares that every book he has written has been discovered on the way to unplanned destinations.

This sparks a smile, as my legacy career has me ‘labelled’ Marketing Strategist. Indeed, my 30-year old company, Strategic Solutions bears the responsibility of its name in a (business) world I now know to be more fun, much more real and much less worrying in un-strategic surrender, especially as we navigate to AC (after corona).

I am not mooting the absence of the age-old stalwarts of the Strategic Plan – Mission, Vision, Objectives. Rather, I am appreciating the exchange of vocabulary to ignite a ‘different’ felt shift, or movement, in myself, the team, the client, the customer, the marketplace, the reader, the community …..and some.

Try these vocabulary exchanges on for size and shift :

  • Mission becomes Purpose which becomes Reason which becomes…
  • Vision becomes Reality which becomes New Reality…
  • Objective becomes Intention which becomes Sense…

The best part is you get to choose the Vocabulary Energetic that works for you and for your Sense of the Future, or perhaps your Sense of a New Reality.

Here’s some to practise as we make ‘quantum leaps’, noticeable or not :

  • Timeline becomes Pulse which becomes Rhythm
  • Strategy becomes Method which becomes Recipe
  • Tactics become Tasks which become Rituals

According to Dr Neal, the Edgewalker definition of Sensing the Future is ‘the ability to understand and embrace the future’.

Let’s take the last bit first.

Embracing the future is an ability we all have, as each breath we take carries us forward. However, it may not be an ability we recognise or enjoy.

I wonder, is this because the future is always just ahead of the point of arrival?

As I ponder, I am aware that understanding the future, especially one we don’t know, is where turmoil can kick right in. Enter the Edgewalker archetypes of change – Hearthtender and Guardian.

The Heathtender – or Heart-Tender – looks kindly at me and says, para-phrased from Anthony De Mello : ‘Find truth in observation, not opinion….’ I take this as embodied observation by listening to the intuitive heart first, before asking my head.

The Guardian or Doomsayer steps forth looks me squarely in my knowing eyes and states : ’It will be alright in the end, and if it is not alright, it’s not the end….’.

I chuckle. That appeals to my sense of play, as well as my feel for the future, as tomorrow shows up, right here and now. Please leave a comment below. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

“Playfulness: The Secret of Genius & the Fountain of Youth in Uncertain Times.”

November 5, 2020

Playfulness conjures up images of childlike innocence and play, freedom and joy! Edgewalkers value and understand the importance of Playfulness, the quality of being light-hearted or full of fun, as described in the book “Edgewalkers” by Dr. Judi Neal,

Now more than ever, especially with the external restrictions, we can choose to play at anytime. When we allow our creative, child-like Spirit and essence to come out and play we ignite Joy which is one of the highest emotional vibrations we can feel. Joy uplifts our sense of self, creates well-being and supports optimal health, relationships and community.

Playfulness, as defined in the book Edgewalkers by Judi Neal, is a joyful sense of fun and creativity, an ability to keep everything in perspective.

A shift in perspective is necessary during these uncertain times and the ability to see and feel things differently is essential to our evolution.

I love the quote by Aldous Huxley: “The Secret of Genius is to carry the Spirit of the child into old age.”  One way we can access our genius, wisdom and creativity is through the Spirit of the child, the part of us who is open, naturally intuitive, less conditioned, more authentic. We can find answers to our problems and gain a different insight by allowing our child-like wonder through play to explore what is possible, connect with our intuition and creative problem solve.

One of my favorite quotes is by George Bernard Shaw : “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” Most of us have become “adulterated” over the years. Many of us have forgotten how to play, we have no time, we are too busy, we don’t value it.

I attended a retreat in my 30’s when I realized I forgot how to play, to let go.
I was focused for years on my education, accomplishments, taking care of everyone, saving the world. A part of me was not happy or fulfilled. I felt restricted, disconnected from myself. There was an exercise encouraging us to play and have fun. Initially this process was very uncomfortable for me and unfamiliar. I was self-conscious. In time as I gave myself permission to play, I allowed myself to connect with my child, let go and play, dance, walk in wonder through nature, laugh and dream again. I discovered parts of myself I had long forgotten. I felt more whole, complete, connected.

Surprisingly from this state of joy and playfulness, many answers I was seeking about decisions in my life, how to approach the problems of the world and where I could best serve resulted from my willingness to play more. I needed to “go out of my serious adult mind” and create more space and awareness through play. The clarity, ease and peace I sought emerged from playfulness. It was as if parts of me were buried, waiting to come out and be experienced. I am so happy I had the courage to open the door!

I now understand the importance of Playfulness. It is the quality that supports letting go, liberation, a space where we can connect more deeply and expansively to parts of ourselves that want and need to be expressed.

Encouraging the children who naturally love and play inherently connect, are curious and open, accepting and allowing. We can learn from them, model their innocent child-like nature. In these times of uncertainty many would say we don’t have time to play, it’s not important, appropriate, relevant.

We can’t afford NOT to play!
For our Spirits and the world to flourish and evolve, we MUST play together as adults along with our own inner child. This is a necessary remedy for the balance we seek as souls and for the transformation of our planet!
